Place & story

Folklore & tradition

An early church remembered

Banagher parish’s historical account places Muldonagh in the medieval parish of Boveva and records a tradition that Patrick founded seven churches in the Faughan valley, possibly including one here. The account itself doubts that personal attribution. It associates Boveva with St Aidan and treats Muldonagh as evidence of an early ecclesiastical landscape. The Patrick connection belongs to local religious tradition; it does not establish a documented visit or a foundation date. [2]

Buildings on the old map

A cluster of dwellings and outbuildings beside Muldonagh Road attracted the Historic Environment Division’s attention in 1999. Its survey traced most of the group to the first Ordnance Survey map of 1832, distinguishing a later two-storey house from the earlier buildings. The cottages stand at differing angles to the minor road, with whitewashed walls and corrugated-iron roofs. Their arrangement preserves a small rural building group rather than a regularly planned terrace. [3]

A cottage adapted over time

The cottage recorded as HB 02/04/009 is a single-storey stone dwelling with three bays. Part of an adjoining outbuilding was incorporated into the accommodation, while another small outbuilding stands across the entrance. The survey recorded replacement windows installed in the 1950s but surviving older openings and sills. Although the building was recorded for its vernacular character, the official entry states that it was not listed. Its importance lies partly in its relationship with the surrounding cottages. [3]
