Place & story

Finding a home for the library

Shantallow Library first opened in January 1981, but arson attacks forced its closure within months. From 1984 it shared St Brigid’s High School library, moving to the youth club in autumn 1989. Its later premises admitted readers on 5 December 1991; Mayor Mary Bradley formally opened them the following month. [2]

The residents’ centre

In a 2020 interview, founder member Derek McCauley recalled neighbours organising bus outings before establishing a tenants’ association. The community centre offered a playgroup, crafts, Irish dancing, piano lessons and discos. Its activities later included gymnastics, indoor bowls and luncheon clubs. [3]
