Place & story
A parish in two counties
Samuel Lewis's 1837 account described Drummully as a parish lying chiefly in Fermanagh's Coole barony, with a smaller part in Monaghan's Dartry barony. He recorded bog, limestone and substantial areas of water, alongside residences including Cara, Lake View and Farm Hill. His figures and descriptions cover that wider parish, rather than the population centre alone. He also recorded a public school teaching about sixty children and a private school teaching about a hundred. [2]
Moving the parish church
Changes to parish boundaries in 1804 removed the former Drummully church at Newtownbutler from the parish. Drummully then used the church at Drumcrin, but flooding helped prompt an 1828 vestry decision to build a replacement. St Mary's was erected at Clonooney, County Monaghan, in 1844. The diocese's anniversary history describes its narrow Gothic lancet windows and queen-post roof trusses, and records gifts of a Dublin-made font in 1890 and a lectern in 1891. [3]
Worship across the border
The border drawn after Partition divided this parish community. The Diocese of Clogher's 2019 anniversary account noted that, although St Mary's stands in the Republic, most of its congregation came from County Fermanagh. The diocese planned a joint anniversary service for the linked parishes of Drummully, Galloon and Sallaghy. Its account also records that older Drummully silver, dating from 1776, remained in use at Galloon, another connection between the churches beyond their modern administrative boundaries. [3]
