Place & story
A parish assembled from its neighbours
Writing in 1881, the Earl of Belmore described Garvary as a large townland on the Enniskillen–Tempo road. A new Church of Ireland parish had taken its name from the place, drawing territory from Enniskillen, Derryvullen, Derrybrusk and Magheracross. Belmore recorded that its church opened and was consecrated in 1868 at the eastern end of the townland. This account distinguishes the new ecclesiastical parish from the older civil divisions around it. [2]
Building Holy Trinity
Holy Trinity was built to plans associated with Welland and Gillespie, with William Campbell as contractor. The Countess of Belmore laid the foundation stone in 1865, and construction continued into 1868. The Irish Architectural Archive records that the Ecclesiastical Commissioners met three-quarters of the cost. Its tall steeple was a prominent element of the design; the Church of Ireland’s architectural survey describes the broad nave, substantial chancel and broach spire on the north side. [3] [4]
Glass at the east end
A later addition to the church was the east window attributed to Mayer and Company and dated 1910 in the Dictionary of Irish Architects. Its three lancets depict the Ascension. The Gloine survey, undertaken by David Lawrence in April 2009, documents the arrangement of these narrow lights and the almond-shaped opening above them in the gable. Together, the surveys distinguish the church’s original building campaign from this subsequent contribution to its interior. [3] [4]
