Place & story
Robert Blakeney’s estate and the burnt castle
Robert Blakeney received land at Castleblakeney from the Cromwellian Commissioners. A royal patent of 1688 confirmed extensive holdings to the executors of his will. The Landed Estates Database records that Castle Blakeney burned in the 1720s, after which the family moved to Abbert. Their interests continued in east Galway, while the village retained the family name after their principal residence had changed. [2]
The church and its later reuse
Samuel Lewis records a Church of Ireland church erected in 1812 with a £200 grant and an equal loan from the Board of First Fruits. Galway's graveyard survey later identifies the former estate church as the village heritage centre, surrounded by its rectangular burial ground. This reuse brought a community purpose to the older building and provided a setting for interpreting the area's history. [3] [4]
Gallagh Bogman and a famine orphan’s story
The village's Nature and Wildlife Plan describes the heritage centre's subjects as ranging from Gallagh Bogman to the O'Kelly and Blakeney families. The body was discovered in Gallagh Bog in 1821 and entered the National Museum collection. The centre also presents Mary Anne Taylor's story as a famine orphan sent to Australia, linking the village's local interpretation with the wider history of emigration. [5]
