Place & story

Colonel Dennis’s iron mausoleum

A circular mausoleum in Clonbern’s old church graveyard was erected around 1865 for Colonel Dennis. Cast-iron panels form its walls, with classical mouldings, a decorated doorway and the Dennis coat of arms. An urn originally stood above the roof on a cylindrical pedestal. The architectural survey records damage to the door and surrounding iron railings, but the structure still demonstrates the use of industrially manufactured material for an elaborate funerary monument. [2]

The Clonbern Park stableyard

Clonbern Park’s former farm buildings date from around 1840. The U-shaped yard included a two-storey stable block, with ventilation slits facing the road and several arched vehicle entrances opening into the yard. A circular opening above the main entrance provided another carefully finished detail. The architectural inventory draws attention to the quality of the limestone work, evidence of the investment once made in the estate’s working buildings. [3]

From small schools to a central school

Samuel Lewis recorded two fee-paying schools at Lerhir and Mohanagh in 1837, educating about 160 children between them. A later generation of local schools served the district until the establishment of Clonberne National School in 1976. The school’s own account identifies its predecessors as Lerhin, Leitra and Mahanagh. Their amalgamation created a central institution serving the village and a wider rural catchment. [4] [5]
