Place & story
A cluster beside the road
Pat Keaveny’s local study identifies a cluster of 23 houses on the 1840 Ordnance Survey map, arranged along a road running across the Glenamaddy–Williamstown road. The area around the T-junction is locally known as Geata Rank. In his 1838 field notes, John O’Donovan described two areas of bog near the eastern and northern boundaries, with the remaining land used for tillage and pasture. [2]
Landholding and population change
The 1856 valuation recorded 13 occupiers in Cloonminda, under the landlord Sir St George Gore. Keaveny’s compilation traces a marked population decline across the middle of the nineteenth century: the townland had 114 people in 23 households in 1841, falling to 57 people in 11 households by 1861. These figures describe the whole townland, rather than a separately bounded village. [2]
