Place & story

The 1886 school

The Dunmore Heritage Audit records a new school at Garrafrauns in 1886, built behind the Catholic chapel on land leased from Richard Kirwan. Flec Fleming of Shanballymore was the contractor. Boys and girls occupied separate classrooms under separate principals. Two junior rooms and a teacher's residence were added in 1896. The present school opened in 1975. [2]

Daniel Heverin’s mill

The audit traces Garrafrauns corn mill to Daniel Heverin, a millwright from the Lavallyroe family, who rebuilt it on an earlier mill site in 1842. Water collected in an upstream pond drove a bucket wheel feeding the grinding machinery. The same stones shelled and ground the grain. The mill continued into the early 1960s, with Pat Heverin its last miller. [2]

Craftsmanship in St Patrick’s

St Patrick's church was completed in 1913. The audit names Robert Kirwan as designer and Michael Finnegan of Dunmore as contractor. Tuam sculptor Thomas McHugh made the altars using Carrara and Connemara marble. Its surviving main altar depicts Christ falling beneath the cross. A round window added around 1920 contains stained glass showing the pelican feeding its young. [2]
