Place & story

A house with defensive ambitions

Galway County Council’s protected-structures record dates Glinsk Castle to about 1635. It describes a four-storey, U-shaped house with a recessed central bay, high chimneys and corner defences. These features place domestic accommodation and military precautions in the same building. The surviving ruin was conserved around 1970. Its gabled outline remains a substantial trace of the early seventeenth-century residence, rather than a conventional medieval tower house. [2]

Three schools become one

A new central school opened in Glinsk in 1983, bringing together children from Ballincurry, Toberroe and Sonnagh national schools. The community history dates those predecessor schools to 1925, 1901 and 1896 respectively. Glinsk opened with six teachers under principal Jim Mitchell. The amalgamation ended three separate school histories while establishing a shared centre for education in the district. [3]

Football between Roscommon and Galway

Glinsk footballers played in both Roscommon and Galway competitions during the twentieth century. At the club’s December 1980 annual meeting in Ballincurry school, members decided to seek a transfer to Galway. After an initial refusal, an appeal to Croke Park succeeded, with the club’s playing territory defined as the Glinsk curacy. The return to Galway competition in 1981 produced an immediate run to the North Board intermediate league final. [4]
