Place & story
A family meeting place
Frank Canning bought the pub in Gurteeny in 1979. Visiting in 2009, journalist Keith Duggan described a two-storey early nineteenth-century building with the family name above the doorway, booths and hurling photographs inside. The Canning family gathered there each Saint Stephen’s Day. [2]
Returning from London
Canning’s hurling career took him from Portumna to London and back to Galway. He also played for Tommy Larkins towards the end of his career, telling Duggan that he wanted to represent the club serving his adopted locality. [2]
