Place & story
The church of 1879
Saint Ciaran’s Catholic Church is dated 1879. Its rubble-granite walls surround a modest three-bay building with pointed windows and a timber-panelled interior beneath scissor trusses. A gallery and stairs survive within the nave, while a carved limestone font stands outside the porch. The architectural inventory identifies blocked former doorways in the long walls, recording alterations to the way this community building was entered and used. [2]
A quay for the kelp trade
Kilkieran’s L-shaped quay was built around 1880 to support the transport of material associated with the kelp industry, including shipments to Scotland. Dressed granite blocks form its battered sides, while two slipways connect the waterfront with the water. Granite mooring posts, metal rings and narrow-gauge rails preserve details of the harbour’s working arrangements. Former stores and dwellings beside the quay add to the surviving industrial setting. From Alginate Industries to Arramara
Alginate Industries opened at Cill Chiaráin in 1947, buying storm-cast sea rods for drying and export to Scotland. State participation followed in 1949, and the company adopted the name Arramara Teoranta in 1955. Its own history records a change in 1962 towards hand-harvested Ascophyllum nodosum. The factory connected local seaweed gathering with industrial processing and overseas markets; after full acquisition by Údarás na Gaeltachta in 2006, Arramara joined Acadian Seaplants in May 2014.
