Place & story
From a house to a school site
Leitrim National School, which gives its address as Leitrim, Kylebrack, dates its establishment to 1829 and connection with the National Board to 1842. Its history identifies Downey’s house as the first premises and records approval of a transfer to the present site in 1862. [2]
Rooms and an underpass
The school’s two classrooms and small hall served until an extension in 1979. Later building work followed increased enrolment. In 2015 it opened two additional classrooms, offices and a connecting corridor, alongside a pedestrian underpass giving access to community sports and playground facilities and parking. [2]
