Place & story
The community buys the buildings
Connemara West finalised its purchase of the former Letterfrack Industrial School in October 1978, after the institution had closed in 1974. Local share subscriptions, loans from three families and a donation from the Guinness Workers’ Educational Fund helped raise the £21,000 purchase price. A Woodskills programme began in 1983; a partnership with Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology followed in 1987 and developed into the Furniture College. [2]
Classrooms beyond the schoolhouse
Letterfrack National School began in a small house at Dawros on 1 November 1866 and moved to its later building in 1965. When a third teacher joined in the early 1970s, the village courthouse temporarily supplied classroom space. Later additions expanded the school, and work in 2010 connected a separate rear classroom with the main building. [3]
