Place & story

Éire Óg’s sports days

Éire Óg Athletic Club was established in Moyglass in 1944. The local historical group records sports days from 1945 on Dervan’s land in neighbouring Slatefield, with running, cycling, tug-of-war and sheaf throwing among the events. Support from emigrants helped provide an Exiles Cup for the best overall performance at the annual sports. The group preserves photographs and a printed fundraising appeal associated with the club. [2]

Names remembered in the fields

The Ballynakill Placenames Project records names passed down orally in Moyglass, including the Long Strips, the Lime Kiln Field and the Callows beside the river. Contributors differed over the extent of the area called the Roochóg. Preserving that disagreement shows how these smaller names can carry local knowledge without having fixed official boundaries. [2]

The Haig connection

The University of Galway’s Landed Estates research records James Haig of London as owning more than eight hundred acres in County Galway during the 1870s. In 1906, his representatives held the mansion at Moyglass and over 160 acres of untenanted demesne land. These records place the house within a wider pattern of estate ownership extending beyond the immediate locality. [3]
