Place & story

The bridge over the Shiven

Newbridge takes its name from the stone bridge carrying the Galway–Roscommon road across the River Shiven. Built around 1830, the crossing has five segmental arches, limestone arch stones and triangular cutwaters with pyramidal caps. Its rubble limestone parapets end in shouldered piers. A rebuilt section on the west face records later intervention in a structure that remains part of the N63 route. The bridge combines a practical river crossing with the local masonry that gives the village a distinctive landmark. [2]

From grain store to side chapel

Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church contains an earlier building within its larger nineteenth-century form. The main church dates from around 1870, but its north side chapel had already served as a smaller church, adapted from a grain store. The former structure’s external window and door openings remain visible on the nave’s internal walls. Round-headed stained-glass windows, a timber ceiling and king-post roof trusses distinguish the later church, whose altar stands at the west end. The surviving earlier openings make its changing use unusually legible. [3]

A school prepared for new arrivals

In March 2022, more than 120 volunteers helped transform a former national school into a hub for people arriving from Ukraine. RTÉ reported that the building was rewired, painted, cleaned and plumbed in little more than 48 hours. A former cloakroom became a kitchen, while three classrooms were prepared as places to gather and, if needed, provide additional accommodation. Families had already reached the village after fleeing the invasion. The work gave an empty educational building a renewed role in welcoming new neighbours. [4]
