Place & story
Killursa church and graveyard
Killursa’s ruined church at Ower is principally late medieval, but incorporates earlier fabric, including a doorway with a horizontal stone lintel in its west gable. Archaeologist Dominic Delany recorded these features during work for a proposed graveyard extension in 2015. Six test trenches investigated geophysical anomalies; they produced modern pottery but no identifiable archaeological features explaining those anomalies. [2]
The Ower Beg Golden Mile
Headford Environment Group’s Ower Beg route won the overall Golden Mile of Galway award in 2014. Its tour begins at Ower House, associated with the Burke family, and records an inscribed gateway stone dated 1850. The group thanked residents and Kilroe National School’s children and staff for their work on the route, including artwork. [3]
