Place & story

A carefully designed entrance

The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage dates Fardrum House to about 1825. The three-bay residence stands over a basement and has a hipped slate roof. Its most elaborate feature is the entrance: four slender Ionic columns support a fluted lintel around leaded doors, sidelights and a fanlight. Stone steps lead up to this doorway. The contrast between the small house's restrained form and its decorative entrance is central to the inventory's appraisal. [2]

The buildings behind the house

Two substantial outbuildings stand behind Fardrum House, also dated to about 1825. Both are two storeys high and built in rubble limestone, with carriage arches below and small openings above. One retains a pitched slate roof; the other is whitewashed and has a hipped corrugated roof. The inventory records their irregular openings and practical masonry construction, which give the rear group a different character from the formal frontage of the residence. [3]

People & connections

Eliza Mathews and the Ennis property

Landed Estates research places Fardrum House in Kilcleagh parish and identifies it on the first-edition Ordnance Survey map. In Griffith's Valuation, published for the area in 1854, Eliza Mathews occupied the house under John Ennis. The recorded value was £12. The university's account also names the Robinson and Campbell families among later occupants, tracing continued domestic use beyond the residence's early nineteenth-century construction. [4]
