Place & story
The Gothic Revival castle
The National Inventory dates Knockdrin Castle to about 1815. Its limestone buildings combine towers, corner turrets and battlemented parapets, with a screen wall linking the main block to a gatehouse. The architecture deliberately evokes a fortified medieval residence, although the house belongs to the Gothic Revival of the early nineteenth century. [2]
Evidence of an earlier house
The rear entrance retains limestone gate piers dated by the inventory to about 1760, probably moved and rebuilt around 1860. The inventory links them to the earlier house known as High Park, which preceded the present castle. Their carved scroll details and surviving estate wall preserve a different architectural phase from the larger Gothic composition. [3]
