Place & story
A nineteenth-century house
A house in Lismacaffry, recorded as protected structure 002-020, dates from around 1860. Its main block has three bays and two storeys, with a substantial two-storey return extending eastwards at the rear. Westmeath County Council's register highlights the balance of the design and the survival of its earlier form and character, recognising domestic architecture within the small rural townland. [2]
Float station in neighbouring Lisduff
A short distance south-east of Lismacaffry, Float railway station in Lisduff dates from 1856. The council register records a detached three-bay building of two storeys, with a single-storey projecting bay on its southern side and a lean-to extension. It identifies the former station as a small Victorian building retaining early fabric. The station thus forms a neighbouring reminder of the railway's presence in this part of Westmeath. [2]
Postal service at the station
The station group includes a wall-mounted cast-iron letter box dated by the register to around 1890. Its raised royal cipher is Victoria's, while lettering on the flap identifies its postal function. Listed separately from the station building, the box preserves an example of the manufactured iron street furniture that accompanied nineteenth-century communications infrastructure. [2]
