Place & story
A chapel and its school
Samuel Lewis’s 1837 account of Ballyloughloe identifies Mount Temple as the location of the Catholic parish chapel. A National Board school was attached to the building. Lewis also records the parish name Caulry, long before it became familiar through the local football club. His description places the village within a wider educational landscape that included separately supported schools at Baylin and Ballinagarbery, rather than treating every parish institution as belonging to Mount Temple itself. [2]
Corpus Christi
The present Corpus Christi church dates from around 1932. Its cruciform plan has a long nave, transepts and a polygonal sanctuary, with a substantial square tower beside the entrance. Tiled roofs, Celtic crosses above the gables and round-headed windows distinguish the building’s exterior. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records its architectural, artistic and social interest. The church remains a conspicuous expression of the village’s twentieth-century parish building programme. [3]
The club and the Park
Caulry GAA was founded in 1928, serving Mount Temple and Baylin. Its own history credits curate Francis Skelly with bringing parish groups together while a new church was being planned. In 1935 the club sought land from the Carn estate when the Land Commission proposed its division, supported by the committee that had raised money for the church. The resulting ground, known as the Park, opened in 1937. The club had already won the county junior football championship in 1935. [4]
