Place & story

A small school on the web

In March 2013 Leckaun National School, then a two-teacher school in the Newtownmanor district, reached the shortlist for Best School Website in the Eircom Junior Spider Awards. Its online work combined text, graphics and video, including pupils interviewing one another and accounts of classroom projects and sport. Regular updates also made the website a means of keeping families informed about school life. [2]

Thirty years seeking more space

Leckaun's accommodation needs reached the Dáil on 29 March 2023. Marian Harkin told the school-building debate that its original application for additional accommodation dated from 1993, when the then principal had herself been a third-class pupil. Harkin described four teachers working with two small classrooms, with additional teaching taking place in a corridor and office, and appealed to Minister of State Thomas Byrne for attention to the case. [3]

The neighbouring parish church

Nearby Newtownmanor's Church of Mary Mother of God marked its bicentenary in June 2025. The anniversary recalled its foundation in 1825 through the efforts of Fr Thomas Ford and local parishioners, supported by Lady Whyte, wife of the landlord Colonel J. J. Whyte. A thanksgiving Mass celebrated by Bishop Martin Hayes was followed by a gathering in Newtownmanor Hall. [4]
