Place & story
A home beside the railway
The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records a former railway worker’s cottage at a level crossing on the Sligo, Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway in Lissinagroagh. The small detached house has two bays, an attic and a lean-to entrance porch. Its cut-limestone walls, timber sash windows and bracketed eaves distinguish it from a purely functional lineside shelter. A yard and sheds stand behind it. [2]
When surveyed in July 2003, the cottage was no longer in use. The inventory records that it had remained occupied until about 1992 and retained original features, including interior details. It provides a local example of the accommodation railway companies supplied for staff at crossings and stations. [2]
