Place & story

Saint Patrick’s and the older church

Saint Patrick’s Church of Ireland church was built around 1850, but its graveyard preserves evidence of earlier religious use. The architectural inventory records a medieval church ruin to the north and gravestones dating from the mid-eighteenth century. The present church combines a four-bay nave with a smaller chancel, a southern porch and a northern vestry. Carved limestone details, paired lancet windows and a double bellcote distinguish the building within its stone-walled enclosure. [2]

The former Methodist church

Newtowngore’s Methodist church was built in 1893 and sold in 1970. By the architectural survey of 2003 it was being used as a parish hall. Its compact single-cell plan retains an entrance porch at one end and the former vestry at the other. Lancet windows and a pointed doorway preserve its original ecclesiastical character, while wrought-iron gates and stone piers mark the entrance. The change of use retained the building within local community life. [3]

The McCaffrey holding

On 21 May 1906, South Leitrim MP Thomas Smyth raised the case of Bridget McCaffrey, whose family had been evicted from a holding on the Upperton estate at Newtowngore in March 1883. He asked whether a proposed estate sale would take account of her claim to return. Chief Secretary James Bryce replied that the Estates Commissioners had received an application from her son Patrick and would investigate. No estate-sale proceedings had yet begun before the Commissioners. [4]
