Place & story
A brief mining venture
Lead workings at Shanvaus and adjoining Pollboy formed part of a venture opened in 1842 and closed in 1846 when the company failed. Geographer Susan Hegarty describes small-scale ore shipments taken by cart to Sligo and onward to Swansea. Later prospecting in the 1950s investigated lead and zinc, but did not lead to renewed extraction. [2]
Shanvaus Cross
Shanvaus Cross marks a junction west of Manorhamilton. The N16 route-selection report identifies it as the point where an alternative road route turns south onto the R286, continuing towards the R278 and Sligo through Calry. The named crossroads thus links Shanvaus with the road network between Manorhamilton, the Glencar area and Sligo. [3]
