Place & story
New Creevelea
The parish history connects Tawnylea with friars who moved there after Creevelea Friary at Dromahair closed in 1650. The settlement consequently became known as New Creevelea. Its Saint Brigid’s Church was built in 1871, later altered and renovated. The church area belonged to Killargue until a parish-boundary revision transferred it to Inishmagrath in 1969. [2]
Eighty years of schooling
Creevelea National School was preparing to mark its eightieth anniversary in September 2013 when it organised an open week to attract pupils. The contemporary report described a two-teacher school with a recent extension and additional learning support. Principal Mary Dolan invited local playgroups and families to see the classrooms and activities, making the anniversary part of an effort to sustain enrolment. [3]
Artists and local learning
The same report records music teaching by Sean Crowe, drama with Mary Blake and creative-art classes involving local sculptor Karen Webster. Pupils displayed handmade books, artwork and a project on Creevelea’s history. These named visits and classroom projects show how the school drew on artists and its own surroundings, alongside a programme of sporting activities and educational trips. [3]
