A seventeenth-century lease
Mark Humphrys's research into the Grady family identifies a lease of Elton to Standish Grady dated 19 April 1672. A later deed of 1737 recited that transaction and also referred to a marriage covenant made in September 1714. Humphrys locates Elton House in Elton townland, Knockainy parish. These documents provide a firmer basis for the family's local association than a general account of the many Grady branches elsewhere in County Limerick. [2]
Residents of the country house
The University of Galway's Landed Estates research records Elton as Mr Grady's seat in Wilson's 1786 description. The Reverend Thomas Grady occupied it in 1814, while Mrs Grady lived there in 1837. At Griffith's Valuation, Mary Jane Grady held the property outright, with the buildings valued at £34. The sequence connects named residents with the house across several generations, while distinguishing the building valuation from the value of the wider estate. [3]
The 1853 rental and later ownership
The 1853 rental identified John Simms as Elton's tenant from year to year. Its description presented the house as occupying an attractive, elevated position, part of the language used to market the property. Landed Estates traces the house into the ownership of the Bevan family of Camas later in the nineteenth century and records that the original building no longer survives. The documentary history therefore outlasts the country house itself. [3]
