Place & story
A school with another role
The building used as Granagh Community Centre began as a nineteenth-century national school. Its educational role ended when Saint Joseph’s National School opened in 1967. The old school had already accommodated meetings beyond the classroom: the local community history places the formation of Granagh Co-op there in 1891 and records its later use by the Local Defence Force during the 1940s. [2]
Drama, clubs and local ownership
Drama and entertainment became prominent in the hall from the late 1960s through the work of Macra na Feirme. The community account also records the camogie club’s formation in 1976 and the soccer club’s beginnings in the hall in 1991. In 2003 parishioners formed Granagh Development Association, which took over ownership of the hall from the church. [2]
