Place & story
The church and its benefactors
The parish history dates the laying of Grange church's foundation stone by Bishop Ryan to July 1837. Dedicated to St Patrick and St Brigid, the church has a high ceiling above its comparatively small interior, with a graveyard in the grounds. Its furnishings record successive gifts: Edmond and Alice Fitzgerald presented the altar, and Richard O'Donnell donated the window to its left in 1964. These named contributions form part of the building's local history. [2]
A memorial from Missouri
A plaque inside the church commemorates Bishop John Joseph Hogan and his connection with the area. Hogan founded the Missouri dioceses of St Joseph in 1868 and Kansas City in 1880. People from those dioceses presented the memorial, which Bishop Raymond J Boland unveiled on 15 August 1999. The commemoration links Grange with the institutions Hogan established in America, bringing that overseas connection into the church's interior. [2]
Grange stone circle
Nearby, Grange stone circle forms part of the Lough Gur archaeological landscape. The Office of Public Works describes a Bronze Age enclosure made from 113 contiguous standing stones. A central posthole suggests that its near-circular outline was measured from a fixed point using a rope. Excavation recovered pottery fragments, animal bones and other material. The monument is in state care, preserving evidence of activity thousands of years earlier than the village church. [3]
