Place & story

The village in 1837

Samuel Lewis described Kilmeedy as a small village with a cattle fair on 7 November. He also recorded a church near the village built in 1665, then in poor condition and intended for rebuilding. These are observations from his 1837 account, rather than a description of the present village. [2]

St Ita’s church

The Catholic church dedicated to St Ita stands in the village centre. The diocesan heritage project records its foundation stone, which names Bishop David Keane and Fr David O’Riordan at the blessing on 11 October 1942. Inside, its survey notes an altar to Our Lady donated by James Moore, who died in 1978, alongside statues of the Sacred Heart and St Joseph. [3]
