Place & story

An 1834 church

Martinstown church’s entrance plaque dates it to 1834. The Limerick Diocesan Heritage Project records Jacob Walsh’s leadership of its construction. James McCormack and his wife donated Stations of the Cross in 1939, and Fr Mark Crowley of Middlesbrough gave rear stained-glass windows in 1991. [2]

Remembering John Flanagan

A statue of locally born Olympic champion John Flanagan was erected in the church grounds in 2001. Reporting on the church in 2007, Jimmy Woulfe recorded that J. P. McManus funded the memorial and that fellow Olympic gold medallist Ronnie Delany unveiled it. The monument places the district’s sporting achievements within a familiar community setting. [3]
