Place & story

A planned settlement

Samuel Lewis's 1837 account traces the establishment of Drumquin's seventeenth-century town to Sir John Davies, around 1617. Davies settled sixteen British families on lands granted by James I and built castles at Kirlish and on the Derg. A road linked the two strongholds across difficult terrain. Lewis recorded surviving sections of this route, connecting the market town with the wider Plantation landscape. [2]

Markets and fairs

By 1837 Drumquin consisted principally of one street and detached houses, many still thatched. Its Thursday market traded provisions and yarn, while a series of fairs served agricultural buyers and sellers throughout the year. Lewis singled out the March and June fairs as particularly well attended. A daily penny post linked the town with Omagh, alongside local facilities including a school and dispensary. [2]

The Presbyterian church opens

A report in the Londonderry Standard records the opening of Drumquin's new Presbyterian church on 13 November 1861. Henry Cooke conducted the service and praised the building's substantial character and open pews. The event raised more than ninety-one pounds through tickets and donations. The congregation's history identifies Thomas Anderson, ordained in 1794, as its first minister after earlier arrangements with neighbouring congregations. [3]
