Place & story
Homes beside the mill
Dyan Mill’s complex included two workers’ cottages as well as the main industrial buildings. A conservation case study in the 2004 handbook Traditional Buildings in Ireland records that the mill buildings had been restored first, while the cottages remained in poor condition. They represent the landlord-built housing that could accompany rural mills. [2]
Adapting small houses
Restoration brought modern facilities into the cottages while seeking to retain their character. Neither house originally had an indoor bathroom. The work converted rear-yard structures to utility and storage space and inserted upstairs bathrooms, requiring changes to the stairs. [2]
