Place & story
Farms and looms
Samuel Lewis described Killeeshil parish in 1837 as a place where inhabitants combined weaving with agriculture. Roughly half its land was cultivated, with pasture, bog and rough ground making up the remainder; local limestone was burned to improve the soil. The parish itself had been separated from Carnteel in 1732. These details describe a rural district along the Dungannon–Ballygawley road whose households relied on several kinds of work. [2]
A parish building preserved elsewhere
Tullyallen Mass House once served Killeeshil’s Catholic parishioners. Built in 1768 and enlarged in the 1830s, it was later recorded and re-erected at the Ulster American Folk Park near Omagh. Its plain sash windows, whitewashed walls and thatched roof preserve a modest form of rural worship building. The priest had accommodation behind the altar, and a hearth offers evidence of the building’s additional use as a school during the week. [3]
Saint Mary’s football club
Killeeshil Saint Mary’s was established as a junior club in 1956, following an earlier club at Tullyallen in the late 1930s and early 1940s. The county’s centenary history records the opening of grounds and dressing rooms in 1970 and league successes during the following decade. Tyrone GAA’s championship roll adds later milestones: the intermediate title in 1986 and the junior championship in 2013. Together, the records trace a club developing facilities as well as winning competitions. [4] [5]
