Place & story
Woodland and grazing
Brian Ó Doibhlin’s placename study records Kilcolphie in 1609 and Kilcolpy in 1639 for Killycolpy townland in Arboe parish. He interprets the first element as woodland, rather than a church. The second is colpa, a word connected with cattle and grazing units. He retains two possible Irish forms, Coill an Cholpa and Coillidh Cholpa, both understood as the wood of the steer. The interpretation draws on historical forms and local pronunciation recorded in 2019. [2]
