Place & story
An earlier Corbally
Knocknahorn was formerly part of Corbally in Dromore parish. T. T. McQuaid’s compilation of parish placenames identifies this portion as Corbally Fergus, distinguishing it from Corbally Conn. It connects the names with Fergus and Conn McCusker, brothers who held the lands in the eighteenth century, and supplies references to volumes 239 and 524 of the Registry of Deeds. [2]
A separate townland in the records
The same study identifies Corbally Hamilton as another name for the portion that became Knocknahorn. Hamilton and McCaron were family names associated with the two sections of Corbally in the Ordnance Survey material. This history explains why an account of the older Corbally area can include land subsequently returned under a different townland name; figures for the two cannot simply be treated as interchangeable. [2]
The census comparison
The official 1851 census lists Knocknahorn separately within Dromore parish, with an area of 533 acres and 29 perches. Its comparison records 247 inhabitants in 1841 and 143 in 1851, a reduction of 104. The return also lists 45 inhabited houses at the earlier census and 27 at the later one. These totals document a substantial contraction, although the table does not identify the reasons individual households disappeared. [3]
