Place & story

From flax to wool

Research by Sebastian Graham in valuation records identifies the Aughnacloy Spinning Company at Lisdoart, with George V. Stewart as secretary. Its flax-spinning and scutching premises were recorded in 1873. A later entry describes the mill as idle; by 1911 the record names Lisdoart Woolen Mills and E. Harris. Nearby entries distinguish further corn, flax and saw mills, showing that the locality’s industrial history involved several premises. [2]

A mill property in an estate

A notice in the Belfast Gazette of July 1940 sought claims against the estate of George A. Stockdale, an insurance broker formerly of Lisdoart who had died in May 1937. The property schedule included approximately ten acres at Lisdoart, together with scutch mills, stores, dwelling houses and other buildings. This contemporary legal record documents an industrial holding with accommodation as well as processing buildings. [3] [4]

Accounts preserved in Belfast

The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland lists three surviving volumes from R. Lockhart, scutch miller at Lisdoart Flax Mills: a receipt book for 1923, a time and wages book for 1943–44, and a payment book covering 1943–49. Catalogued as D 1687, they preserve evidence of the business during the Second World War and its aftermath. [5]
