Place & story
An estate held in trust
Lissan House developed over successive generations of the Staples family. The Architectural Heritage Fund traces its beginnings to Thomas Staples in the seventeenth century, with substantial work by his son Robert in 1660 and further alterations by later owners. In 2006 the house, estate and historic collections passed from Hazel Dolling to a trust for community benefit. Public opening followed in 2007, with restoration continuing over the next five years. Hazel Dolling’s campaign
The Lissan House Trust records that Hazel returned to Lissan in 1965. After her husband Harry died in 1986, she managed the estate alone. In 1997 she established a charitable trust to preserve it, and she led the campaign that brought the house national attention through the BBC Restoration television series in 2003. [3]
