Place & story

From Cumber Upper to Learmount

Stranagalwilly belonged to Cumber Upper before joining Learmount when that parish was created in 1831. Roots Ireland’s parish guide distinguishes this Tyrone townland from the larger group of townlands on the Derry side of Learmount. The change matters when tracing earlier records: the guide directs researchers to the predecessor parishes for material predating Learmount’s formation. [2]

The reported shooting of July 1910

On 29 July 1910, a question in the House of Commons concerned a reported shooting at Stranagalwilly on 16 July. Attorney-General Redmond Barry said police had received a report that two shots struck a hut occupied by three gamekeepers, breaking windows without injuring anyone. The keepers said they fired at men running away and received return fire. Barry stated that police were investigating. His answer records the reports then available, rather than a finding about who was responsible. [3]
