Place & story
The nineteenth-century townland
The official 1851 census lists Tulnacross within Kildress parish, covering just over 543 acres. Its comparative figures give 325 inhabitants in 1841 and 254 in 1851, a fall of seventy-one people. Inhabited houses declined from fifty-six to forty-five. These are figures for the whole townland; the table does not explain the departure or death of individual residents. [2]
Tulnacross Shamrocks
Kildress Wolfe Tones’ club history identifies a March 1891 game between Tulnacross Shamrocks and Dunamore Shamrocks as the parish’s first recorded GAA activity. Players from Kileenan and Killucan also took part. This was an earlier townland-based football culture: the single parish club, Kildress Wolfe Tones, was established in 1952. The modern club’s account preserves Tulnacross’s place in that longer history. [3]
