Place & story

The townland behind the village name

Dooish belongs to West Longfield civil parish and the barony of West Omagh. The mapped townland covers about 846 acres, extending beyond the small settlement represented by the village name. Its neighbours include Curraghamulkin, Coolavannagh and Segully. These boundaries locate Dooish within Drumquin's rural hinterland and distinguish it from the several Donegal localities sharing its English spelling. [2]

People & connections

Two schools in the 1863 directory

The Omagh Almanac and Street Directory of 1863 recorded separate male and female national schools at Dooish. John McTaggart taught the boys under the management of the Reverend Francis O'Neill. Anne Cooke taught the girls, whose manager was the Reverend John Davidson. The entries provide named evidence of local schooling and its management in the mid-nineteenth century, rather than an inferred foundation date for a surviving building. [3]

People & connections

Catherine Eekin’s teaching career

The Commissioners of National Education's return for March 1905 identifies Catherine Eekin as principal of Dooish school, roll number 3988 in County Tyrone. It records her education at Omagh Model School and training at Marlborough Street, Dublin. Her entry connects a rural classroom with the national system of teacher training. The document supplies a specific professional association with Dooish without establishing that the school premises were unchanged from the nineteenth century. [4]
