Place & story
A name describing the land
Placenames researchers Conchubhar Ó Crualaoich and Aindí Mac Giolla Chomhghaill explain An Screagán as an area of rough or stony ground. They caution that the name need not originally have covered the whole modern townland: surface bedrock just across the eastern boundary in Mucklagh may have been its original reference. [2]
The Ploughing returns
Screggan hosted the National Ploughing Championships on Joe Grogan’s farm in 2016, 2017 and 2018. In December 2024, the National Ploughing Association announced a return for September 2025, with Lisa Flaherty Grogan hosting and neighbouring farmers supplying additional ground for competitions and parking.
