Place & story

The surviving estate lodge

The former gate lodge to Sharavogue House dates from about 1820. Its small L-shaped plan is dressed with Tudor details: a pointed doorway, stone labels over the windows and decorative bargeboards beneath the gables. Cast-iron windows are among the surviving features recorded by the architectural inventory. The building gives the former estate a visible presence beside the road even though the principal house has disappeared. [2]

A fragment of a larger estate

Sharavogue House once had entrances on different sides of its grounds. The architectural inventory notes another lodge on the opposite side of the estate, facing the Tullamore–Birr road, but records that it had been extensively altered. The surviving Tudor-style lodge therefore provides a clearer reminder of the estate’s original approach and architectural treatment than the altered entrance or the lost house. [2]

Restoring Sharavogue Bog

Sharavogue Bog lies between the Little Brosna River and the former Birr–Roscrea railway embankment. Drainage threatened the raised bog in the early 1990s, when local men Liam Egan and Patrick Headon intervened to preserve it. Restoration continued through The Living Bog project: contractors installed more than 400 dams in 2021 to hold water on the bog and help restore conditions in which peat can form. [3]
