Place & story

The old Carrick school

The 2012 Tidy Towns adjudicator identified the former Carrick National School as the home of Curraghboy’s Rural Development offices. Its retained stone plaque dated the school to 1890, preserving the building’s earlier purpose after conversion. The same visit recorded a stone map in the church grounds showing the townlands of Kiltoom and Cam with their Irish and English names, another local effort to make the district’s history visible. A classroom opening in 2026

In April 2026 Curraghboy National School marked the official opening of a special classroom with a commemorative plaque. Rebekah O’Reilly’s contemporary report records Education Minister Hildegarde Naughton visiting pupils and staff, with principal Rory Leonard explaining the school’s approach to inclusion. The event adds a recent stage to the community’s long use of school buildings as shared local institutions. [3]
