Place & story

The constabulary barracks

A house in Curraghroe served as a constabulary barracks at the time of Griffith's Valuation. The property, leased from Theobald Dillon's estate, carried a valuation of £5. The University of Galway's Landed Estates database records local evidence suggesting that the police withdrew in the late 1860s. It also identifies the later name Sullivan's Cross, linking the former barracks with a familiar local crossroads. [2]

People & connections

Martin Fallon and the Volunteers

Commandant Martin Fallon recalled being born and educated in Curraghroe, where his teacher's interest in Irish history helped shape his later political involvement. In his Bureau of Military History statement, he described joining the Volunteers early in 1917. The first Curraghroe company numbered only five men, meeting for weekly drill and contributing small subscriptions towards arms and expenses. Fallon also remembered canvassing during Count Plunkett's election campaign that year. [3]

The former national school

Curraghroe's national school eventually closed after staffing reductions and the development of a newer school at nearby Cloontuskert. A Shannonside report in August 2022 described it as having been closed for more than twenty years. That year Roscommon County Council approved its proposed conversion to a residence, with conditions covering the extension's finish and other works. The permission records a new proposed use for a former community building. [4]
