Place & story
From school to community centre
Drummullin National School survives in local life through its later use as Creeve Community Centre. A Roscommon Herald report on a celebration there in September 2026 explicitly identifies the centre as the former school. The occasion brought former pupils back to the building where they had begun their education. The school’s name and the centre’s different name therefore refer to successive uses of the same local institution. [2]
Former pupils working abroad
Among the school’s former pupils were Steve and Mary Walsh, whose sixty years in religious life were celebrated by the Creeve community in 2026. Steve Walsh was ordained in 1966, taught at St Mary’s in Rathmines and went to Kenya in December 1969, spending more than twenty-five years on the missions. Mary Walsh, professed in the Mercy order in 1966, later worked for four years in Rwanda after the 1994 genocide. [2]
A new connection in 2020
The community centre took on another practical role during the expansion of rural broadband. National Broadband Ireland reported that Creeve Community Centre’s public connection went live in September 2020, alongside facilities at Gortaganny and Tulsk. These shared access points formed an early stage of the National Broadband Plan, providing internet access while households awaited the wider fibre network. The former school thus continued serving the district through a new form of shared infrastructure. [3]
