Place & story
A building shaped over centuries
Dunamon Castle incorporates a tower house begun around 1400. Extensions followed around 1670, further eighteenth-century alterations gave it castellated features, and a substantial west wing was added in 1855. The estate preserves outbuildings, walled gardens with pigeon nesting boxes, and an icehouse reached through a long stone tunnel. These structures show how a fortified residence became a country-house complex. [2]
A welcome at Donamon
In March 2022, a former student residence at the Divine Word community became accommodation for people fleeing Ukraine. Father George Agger describes volunteers, Roscommon County Council and the local Lions Club preparing the empty building in a single day. The first group of 38 guests arrived on the evening of 18 March. The residence was renamed the Donamon Fáilte Centre. [3]
