Place & story
The church built in 1828
Kilmore's Church of Ireland church was built in 1828 with assistance from the Board of First Fruits. Samuel Lewis records a loan of £923 towards its erection. The National Inventory describes its castellated three-stage tower, pointed windows with timber tracery, and limestone entrance steps. An arched gateway and curving stone boundary complete the approach, while the surrounding graveyard contains both upright headstones and recumbent memorials. [2] [3]
Schools and charitable bequests
Lewis's 1837 account records two small schools supported by subscriptions gathered by the rector, including one taught in his gatehouse. A parish loan fund operated under A Auchmuty's supervision. Lewis also describes a Lawder bequest providing annual funds to clothe six poor men and six poor women, and a separate donation by Abbé O'Beirne of Versailles towards the Catholic chapel and a proposed schoolhouse. The latter school had not yet been built. [3]
Closure and local care
The Representative Church Body Library's parish history distinguishes the ending of regular services around 1980 from the church's formal closure in 1996. It records a subsequent lease to a local community group, which repaired the roof and maintained the building. The archive also preserves a ground plan from around 1865, when a chancel was made from the eastern vestry. These records document changes in both the building's arrangement and its institutional use. [4]
