Place & story
The night encounter
An account in brigade activity file A27 describes four Volunteers working on the road at Kilroosky when a police patrol approached at night. According to the account, gunfire followed and one policeman was killed, with others wounded. The report says the Volunteers had heard the patrol approaching while they were working. [2]
The sketch map
A sketch accompanying the report marks the post office, the road from Beechwood barracks and the route past Carrowcarry National School. Its notes explain that Crown forces had filled a road trench with timber and turf, which Volunteers were removing. The document preserves the road network as well as the participants’ account of the encounter. [2]
The ringfort
The Archaeological Survey records a ringfort in Kilroosky townland, measuring about forty metres across. An earthen bank and hedge enclose its overgrown interior. Part of the surrounding ditch was recut as a field drain, while the entrance recorded on the north-northeast side was considered probably secondary. [3]
