Place & story

The old church at the crossroads

The community group’s history dates the older northern part of the former church to about 1819 and its nave to about 1842. It records that the early building also served as a schoolroom. Worship continued here until 1963, when Saint Joseph’s Church replaced it. The old building subsequently had commercial uses before becoming a community centre, carrying its history into a different kind of parish gathering place. [2]

A painted ceiling and a restored hall

The old church’s ceiling was painted by two Italian artists in 1904. Its survival became an important feature of the restored community centre, officially opened by President Mary McAleese on 4 February 2011. The community history records the successive uses of the building alongside this decorative work, making the hall a surviving link between nineteenth-century worship, early twentieth-century embellishment and more recent community activity. [2]

The Cloonlarge Loop

The Cloonlarge looped walk opened in April 2018. That year’s Tidy Towns adjudication recorded work on passing places and a tree trail, together with heritage signs and wood carvings. The adjudicator also noted local photographs used with their maker’s permission to explain the area. These details show how the project combined an interest in the bog landscape with the community’s effort to record and present its history. [3]
