Place & story

The estate survey

The National Library holds an 1802 map covering the estates of John Hearn and Henry Trant at Carrowreagh and Lissalway. Made by Brownrigg, Longfield and Murray, it records tenants’ names and the acreage of holdings, preserving a detailed account of landholding at the time. [2]

A ringfort on the ridge

North of the settlement, the Archaeological Survey records a ringfort on a broad ridge in Lissalway townland. Its enclosed area measures about thirty-nine metres by thirty-six. A bank and outer ditch remain, while a fragment of a later roadway crosses part of the interior; the survey could not identify an original entrance. [3]

Older field divisions

Elsewhere in the townland, surviving banks and drains divide pasture into six small rectangular plots beside a central north–south bank. The archaeological record notes that no house sites were visible and cautions that these fields may be comparatively recent. Their presence should therefore not be treated as proof of a medieval settlement. [4]
